Mahogany is widely used for the bodies of electric guitars. It is a strong stable timber with a bright, open tone. Gibson use Mahogany for the bodies of most of their electric guitars, often with a carved maple cap such as is used on Les Paul models. Khaya is an beautiful species of Mahogany from Africa. It is very similar to the traditional Honduran/Brazilian Mahogany in its look, weight, workability and sonic properties. It is easy to work with and machines and sands well.
