Purflings are decorative strips used to the inside of the bindings. Normally the purflings are arranged so that there is a black layer against a light coloured top, back or binding and a white layer against a dark back, top or binding. These laminated timber purflings are made using a fibre material for the black layer, making them very flexible. They can be glued in place at the same time as the binding without pre-bending. Use the same glue as for the binding, Titebond for timber bindings and plastic glue for plastic binding. The purflings can also be used as a rosette, either by inlaying multiple pieces or using in combination with Abalone purling strips. - Black/white/black - blacks are flexible fiber, whites are maple timber - 1.55mm (0.061") wide - 0.55B/0.45W/0.55B - 2.5mm (0.10") deep - 875mm (34.5") long - 2 required for 1 guitar top or back - Long enough for large guitars
Laminated purfling for guitars and other musical instruments

The purflings can be doubled up to give wider combinations eg-

2 x black/white purflings to form a 4 ply black/white/black/white
or
1 black/white and 1 black/white/black to form a 5 ply purfling

The rebate for the purfling should be cut just before the rebate for the binding. This can be cut into the edge of the guitar either by hand with our Purfling/Binding Cutter or with a router and our Binding Router Bit with a ball bearing of the appropriate size.
