GUITAR by Rene Francois Lacote, Paris ca 1830
Details & Restoration Report by Ian Watchorn

A very rare and well-preserved guitar by Rene Lacote, ca. 1830 (label undated), in a fitted period (English) coffin-case. This guitar is finely decorated with engraved and coloured mother-of-pearl floral motifs around the edge of the belly and rosette.

Belly: 2 pieces of medium-grained book-matched pine, edged with ivory and ebony lines containing engraved and coloured mother-of-pearl floral motifs set in a black mastic. This guitar is very rare, in that it has a double soundboard, the second board being fitted between belly and back, cut to fit just inside the inner rim of the guitar. It is fixed to the top and bottom blocks on a separate set of liners. The remainder of the second soundboard is free-swinging, and the oval Lacote label is affixed to it at the soundhole. There is a second, oval soundhole set into the centre of the back of this guitar.

Back and Sides: Of finely figured satinwood, the back being a single piece, veneered on pine. The sides are of matching wood. The purflings are of ebony. There is a satinwood repair in the upper bout on the bass side.

Head and Neck: The neck and heel are veneered with ebony, the head of beechwood veneered front and back with ebony. Fingerboard and bridge are ebony, the nut of ivory being original. The fretboard is flush to the belly, and is fitted with the original T-section silver frets. From the 10th to the 17th fret, they are set into ebony strips inlaid into the pine of the belly. The tuners are unstamped, but are in the style of Jerome, and have ivory buttons and rollers.

Tone: The tone of this guitar is excellent - bright, well focussed and very strong and clear in all registers. The tenor and bass registers are very strong but with good definition and clarity. The neck is in excellent condition and the action is low and easy to play for the entire range. The guitar retains a period English wooden case, which may well be original, having been supplied with the guitar through a London dealer.
