Queensland Maple has been used for many years in the Australian guitar industry. Australian guitar manufacturer Maton have used this timber for the necks of most of their steel string guitars for several decades. We have found that this local timber also works very well in classical guitars. These Queensland Maple necks and heels are ideal for acoustic or classical guitars. The timber is similar to Mahogany, lightweight, stable and strong, making it ideal for necks. It's straight-grained, carves and sands easily. The figured grades exhibit a beautiful and subtle diagonal figuring. Grading is based purely on the aesthetic appearance. 1st grade pieces are as free from imperfections as possible and are close to quartersawn. Lower grade pieces are downgraded due to some aesthetic flaw such as discolouration, small knots or being off quartersawn. The neck blanks are long enough to be cut into two pieces and have the head spliced on in the traditional way. The heel can either be made from one piece or laminated from a neck blank cut into pieces (see below for details). Neck Minimum Dimensions - 75mm x 21mm x 640mm (3" x 3/4" x 25") Heel Minimum Dimensions - 70mm x 75mm x 150mm (2-3/4" x 3" x 6")
Queensland Maple is an excellent timber for making necks and heels. It has a consistency similar to Mahogany and is easy to work with planes and other hand tools as well as to rout for a dovetail or mortice joint.

Laminated vs One-piece Heel

The heel of an acoustic or classical guitar can be made of either one piece of wood or laminated from 3-4 layers.

For a one-piece heel simply use a heel blank glued onto a neck blank.

To laminate a heel start with a neck blank, dress the surfaces flat then cut it into short pieces. These pieces are glued in a stack to form the heel. If care is taken it is usually possible to get two laminated heels from a neck blank.
