Spanish Cypress (Cupressus Sempervirens) also known as Mediterranean Cypress, was one of the most popular body woods for building lutes, it was adopted for guitar construction during the 1800s.

During this time it was considered a less expensive timber when compared to the rosewoods and other non-domestic timbers that attracted high shipping charges in Europe. It was a used by Antonio De Torres for his less ornate classical guitars, many of these guitars are still surviving.

From the 1900s onwards cypress became more and more used exclusively for Flamenco Guitars.

Due to it's history and popularity, stocks of this timber have become very low, it is becoming hard to acquire and expensive.
