French polishing is an old proven method of protecting and beautifying timber by applying dissolved shellac using a pad to deposit hundreds of very thin coats.

The raw material used to make shellac is actually produced by the Lac insect. It is collected and goes through a process to purify and de-wax the raw material to form shellac flakes in varying grades.

The flakes are dissolved in industrial alcohol or methylated spirits to the desired consistency and then strained ready for use.
