White Mother of Pearl is the most common inlay material for the fingerboards of guitars and other stringed instruments. It has a white or light silver colour with a natural iridescence and a subtle beauty.
Dots are the easiest inlays to install, they require only a hole drilled into the timber. Always wear a dust mask when sanding and cutting pearl as the dust may be hazardous if inhaled.

To install pearl dots simply drill a hole of an appropriate diameter and depth and then glue the dot in with superglue or epoxy. It's best to use a brad-point or dowel drill bit as it will be easier to position and give a cleaner edge.
Once the glue has dried level the dot to the timber using a hard sanding block or fingerboard radius block with sandpaper attached with double-sided tape. This hard block will help keep the surface level.
