Ebony is the traditional choice for the fingerboards of acoustic and classical guitars, it is also frequently used on electric guitars and basses. It's used on the highest quality guitars due to its look, hardness, stability and acoustic properties. These blanks are cut from the finest African Ebony, they are dry and ready to slot and process into fingerboards. Grading is based purely on aesthetic considerations and lower grade fingerboards can make just as good a sounding and functioning guitar as the higher grades - The first grade timber has a more even colour while the second grade can be more grey with some streaking, pinholes or small knots. The premium grade is closest to pure black colour and has little to no streaking. Some luthiers prefer the look of the second grade as it has more character. Guitar fingerboards minimum dimensions - 68mm x 7.5mm x 520mm (2-3/4" x 9/32" x 21") Acoustic or Electric Guitar fingerboards minimum dimensions - 63mm x 7.5mm x 520mm (2-1/2" x 9/32" x 21") Bass fingerboards minimum dimensions - 68mm x 7.5mm x 660mm (2-3/4" x 9/32" x 26") 6-String Bass fingerboards minimum dimensions - 95mm x 7.5mm x 710mm (3-3/4" x 9/32" x 28")

Ebony is the preferred timber for musical instrument fingerboards/fretboards, it is also commonly used for bridges and headplates. African Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) also known as Gabon Ebony is the most popular type of ebony for instrument making. It is dense, hard and stable.

Quality - Our ebony pieces are free from cracks and knots. They are dry and stable, ready for use.

Look - Ebony has a black or dark grey colour. A small amount of light streaking is considered acceptable, especially in the lower grades. Any streaking becomes barely visible once the timber has been treated with oil or wax. African ebony is very dense and has a fine grain so it can be polished to a fine finish.

Price - Good African Ebony is reasonably expensive per weight, however the fretboard, bridge and headplate are not large pieces. Using Ebony will normally not break the budget and makes a nice final touch to a handmade guitar.

Availability/Renewability - Excellent quality ebony logs are still available in the size needed to make guitar components. Ebony is now harvested using sustainable practices, ensuring a steady supply of quality timber is available in years to come.
