Ebony is the traditional choice for the fingerboards of acoustic and classical guitars, it is also frequently used on electric guitars and basses. It's used on the highest quality guitars due to its look, hardness, stability and acoustic properties.
These blanks are cut from the finest African Ebony, they are dry and ready to slot and process into fingerboards.
Grading is based purely on aesthetic considerations and lower grade fingerboards can make just as good a sounding and functioning guitar as the higher grades - The first grade timber has a more even colour and grain while the second grade can be more grey with some streaking, pinholes or small knots and angled or uneven grain. Some luthiers prefer the look of the second grade as it has more character.
