REPLACING BASS TUNERS - If you are replacing the existing tuners on a bass it's important to check a few things to ensure you get the best fitting set -

1) Hole Diameter - Most tuners used in basses will either fit a hole around 14mm (9/16") or a hole 17.6mm (11/16"). Generally 17.6mm holes are used for vintage style tuners with push-in bushes while 14mm holes fit tuners with screw-in bushes. It's highly recommended to choose a set which fits the same diameter hole as in your headstock.

2) Bushes - Some tuners have push-in bushes, these are not screwed into the tuner but are a tight fit in the hole in the wood. The other type are screw-in bushes with washers, these are screwed in to the main tuner to hold it in place. It's better to choose a set with the same type of bushes to make fitting more straightforward.

3) Screw Holes - Some tuners have one screw and some have multiple screws. If your tuners have one screw pay very careful attention to the position of this screw, most of the time it is at the bottom of the tuner but sometimes it's to the side. The other type usually have 3-4 screws, it's best to carefully check the dimensioned diagram and see if these holes are in the same place as the original tuners. If you choose a set of tuner with the correct screw position it will eliminate the need to drill new holes in the headstock. If your tuners have a screw position that isn't available or doesn't match originals, you will need to drill new holes to install the set.
