Mahogany has been used for the necks of steel-string guitars ever since their development. It can also be used for classical guitars, though the timber is heavier than the traditional Spanish Cedar. Khaya is an beautiful species of Mahogany from Africa. It is very similar to the traditional Honduran/Brazilian Mahogany in its look, density and sonic properties. The timber is medium-density, stable and strong. It has straight grain and carves and sands easily. The blanks are dry and ready to use. Grading is based purely on the aesthetic appearance. 1st grade pieces are as free from imperfections as possible and are close to quartersawn. Lower grade pieces are downgraded due to some flaw such as discolouration, minor warpage, small knots or being off quartersawn. The neck blanks are long enough to be cut into two pieces and have the head spliced on in the traditional way. A heel can either be made from one piece blank, or laminated from a neck blank cut into pieces (see below for details). Neck Minimum Dimensions - 95mm x 23mm x 680mm (3-3/4" x 7/8" x 27") Heel Minimum Dimensions - 85mm x 57mm x 150mm (3 3/8" x 2 1/4" x 6")

The Khaya Mahogany (Khaya ivorensis) which we sell is much closer in look to South American Mahogany than the the other African Mahogany also known as Sapele Mahogany. The grain, which has a reasonably average spacing, is very dark brown almost black. This grain is particularly open and will require filling before finishing.

Laminated vs One-piece Heel

The heel of an acoustic or classical guitar can be made of either one piece of wood or laminated from 3-4 layers.

For a one-piece heel simply use a heel blank glued onto a neck blank.

To laminate a heel start with a neck blank, dress the surfaces flat then cut it into short pieces. These pieces are glued in a stack to form the heel. If care is taken it is usually possible to get two laminated heels from a neck blank.
