This precision brad-point drill bit makes the difficult task of drilling holes for side dots much easier and more accurate. The needle-like tip can be centred much more accurately than a standard drill bit. It also stays in place and doesn’t wander. Sharp blades cut a clean hole and leave less chipping than other drill bits. - Brad-point (dowel drill) - Easy to centre - Does not wander - 2mm diameter for side dots - 67mm total length - Hexagonal shaft - Precision machined - High quality - Made in Japan

To drill holes for side dots centre marks between the frets. It is optional whether to mark the centre of the thickness of the fingerboard and some luthiers prefer to ‘eyeball’ this dimension.

Start off at a very slow pace until the point of the drillbit find its way and then drill faster.

It is not essential to drill the exact depth of the side dot. Usually if the hole is drilled deeper the side dot can be glued and pushed in until just flush. Superglue or epoxy should be used.

Side dots are usually installed before the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th (double), 15th and 17th frets. It is optional to install on the 1st, 19th, 21st and 24th (double) frets.
