The String Spacing Nut Rule is by far the most accurate and easy way to set out the string position on nuts and bridges. The intervals gradually reduce from one end of the rule to the other so that you can find the exact spacing for any neck width of bridge. Hiroshima Nut files are used for cutting or adjusting the slots in the nuts of guitars and basses. Just choose the gauge that matches the string and cut the groove. If the string is bigger than the file, the file can be rocked from side to side to widen the slot slightly. The Groobar™ Nut Slot Assist Tool allows for fast and safe adjustment of nut slots in a guitar nut to the correct height. It is especially useful for slotting nuts from blanks, or adjusting nut slots that are very high.

To use the String Spacing Nut Rule start by marking the position of the two outside strings. These are usually spaced 2.5-3.5mm from the edge of the fingerboard depending on the type of guitar and player’s preference.

Once the outside two strings are marked find the correct place on the rule to have 5 spaces between them (5 spaces for a 6-string guitar, 3 spaces for a 4-string bass)

As the intervals decrease along the length of the rule it’s easy to find a spacing that works perfectly for any neck width. Once you find the correct placement mark the other string positions and slot the nut.

Nut files are used to create or modify the slots in guitar and bass nuts.

These hardened stainless steel files are specially designed for nut slotting. They are made to various widths to match the diameters of strings. The half-round edge profile cuts a round bottom in the slot to match the string profile.

Nut slots should be cut with a slight angle to the fingerboard surface, so the string bares on an edge where the nut meets the fingerboard.

The files are suitable for all materials including bone, plastic, graphite, Tusq and brass.

How ot use Groobar Nut Slotting Depth Gauges:

1) Place a Groobar on the fingerboard surface against the nut
2) Use a short straightedge, Fret Rocker or String Action gauge to sit on the Groobar and the 2nd fret
3) Look for a small gap between the straightedge and the 1st fret. If no gap is present use a thicker Groobar
4) Use a nut file to file the slot. When the file goes down to the Groobar it will make a noise and the black will be scratched - stop filing
5) Repeat on all nut slots (different thickness Groobars can be used for different strings)
6) Fine tune nut slots when strings are fitted if needed
