Spanish Cedar is the traditional timber used for classical and flamenco guitar necks. Despite its name the timber actually grows in South and Central America and is also known as Honduran Cedar and Cuban Cedar.
Cedar is light, strong and stable with a golden-brown colour and subtle beauty. it is acknowledged by many classical guitar makers as the perfect timber for the necks of these instruments. It is slightly softer and than mahogany and not as strong so it is not suitable for steel-string guitars. Carving a neck from Spanish Cedar is a pleasure due to its straight grain and soft, even texture.
The blanks are dry and ready to use. Grading is based purely on the aesthetic appearance. 1st grade pieces are as free from imperfections as possible and are close to quartersawn. Lower grade pieces are downgraded due to some visual flaw such as discolouration, small knots or being off quartersawn.
The neck blanks are long enough to be cut into two pieces and have the head spliced on in the traditional way. A heel can either be made from one piece blank, or laminated from a neck blank cut into pieces (see below for details).
