How to Fix Sharp Fret Ends

One of our customers recently asked:

'Hi there, I have a cheap guitar that has sharp fret ends. Ive tried applying oil to the fretboard but I can still feel the frets when I move up and down the fretboard. Is the fret end file easy to use? Would I need any other tools to fix sharp fret ends? Thanks, Cody

Thank you for your Message Cody,

The Fret End Dressing File is a good way to round off the ends of each fret. Keep in mind that if the fingerboard has actually shrunk and the frets are sticking out past the sides of the fingerboard it may be best to flatten off the fret ends to the fingerboard before rounding them.

This flattening is best achieved with a hard straight block 150-200mm long with fine (600-1200) wet and dry sandpaper stick to it. The hard block will reduce the chances of wearing away the fingerboard between the frets. Please be careful not to hit the top of the guitar with the block and minimise the contact with the side of the fingerboard as it will leave a matte finish where the sandpaper touches the lacquer.

Once the ends of the frets are flush with the side of the fingerboard you can use the Fret End Dressing File to take the corners off the frets making them smooth for playing.
