- Brass and plastic tips reduce denting of frets - Shot-filled shock-absorbing handle - 241mm (9-1/2") long - 20.5mm (13/16") striking surface diameter - 227g weight A hammer is the traditional tool for installing frets and is still used by many guitar makers. This durable hammer comes with a machined brass convex face especially for more efficient no-bounce fret installation. The shock-absorbing shot-filled head won't bounce like a regular hammer, so it transfers more energy directly to the fret. This helps seat the wire more firmly, with fewer hammer blows and less chance of the fret springing back. Durable steel-reinforced handle. Warning - Wear eye protection such as safety googles while using this hammer.
To hammer in frets start by hitting the fret lightly, just so the bottom of the tang goes into the slot and the fret stands upright. Then hit harder, starting at one end of the fret and working towards the other.

There is no set rule of how many times to hit the fret and it will depend on the slot, fretwire, timber in the fingerboard and radius. Normally 2-4 passes of about 6 hits is enough to get the get the fret fully seated without damaging it too much.

Try not to hit too hard in one place as it can dent or bend the fret. It takes a bit of getting used to hitting with the right amount of force but once you have mastered this the frets will go in evenly.
