Fret Work Hammer The perfect size and weight hammer for installing frets - Brass and plastic tips reduce denting of frets - 250mm long (9.8") - 70mm head (2.76") - 25.4mm (1.0") Dia. head - 230g weight WARNING-PROTECT YOUR EYES-WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES Any soft face hammer or mallet may chip if struck against rough or shaped edged object, possibly resulting in bodily injury.
To hammer in frets start by hitting the fret lightly, just so the bottom of the tang goes into the slot and the fret stands upright. Then hit harder, starting at one end of the fret and working towards the other.

There is no set rule of how many times to hit the fret and it will depend on the slot, fretwire, timber in the fingerboard and radius. Normally 2-4 passes of about 6 hits is enough to get the get the fret fully seated without damaging it too much.

Try not to hit too hard in one place as it can dent or bend the fret. It takes a bit of getting used to hitting with the right amount of force but once you have mastered this the frets will go in evenly.
