Undercutting the fret tangs is essential for fret work: it makes the job faster for bound necks where the fret ends go over the binding, and it helps save the lacquer finish at the edges of unbound fretboards. Our Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper does this job in a snap, just squeeze the handle and the fret tang is cut quickly and cleanly without bending or crimping.

It also helps save the lacquer finish at the edges of unbound fretboards. Try nipping the fret tang to length before installing the fret. Now you'll only need to cut and file the overhanging crown, and the fret will be less likely to twist and unseat.

It’s a good practice to allow 0.5-1mm of clearance between the end of the tang and the binding on each side. This eliminates the possibility of the tang accidentally dislodging the binding as you install the fret.
