Curved Paua Abalone shell strips for purfling or rosette inlay - 16 pieces 24mm (15/16") long - Curved with 125mm (5") diameter - 1.6mm (1/16") wide - 1.2mm (0.05") deep - Natural shell Using Abalone in the rosette or purflings makes a lavish yet tasteful embellishment on an acoustic guitar. Paua Abalone comes from the seas of New Zealand. It has an excellent colour range and great iridescence. It has a darker and richer colour than Mother of Pearl or other Abalones with hues of green, blue, pink, purple and red. Always wear a dust mask when sanding and cutting pearl as the dust may be hazardous if inhaled.

These strips can be used to form part of the rosette or the purfling of an acoustic guitar. The most common place to have pearl/abalone purfling is the top but it can be used on the outline of any part of the guitar.

A channel can be routed in a rosette to install the abalone strips, or the rosette can be installed using timber/plastic purflings and a teflon filler strip. A teflon filler strip should be glued in place with a timber or plastic purling either side of it, once the purflings are levelled the filler strip is removed leaving a channel of the correct size to fit the shell strips.

When used for purling, the shell strips should be bent and cracked to fit the desired curve. Straight strips can form slight curves while curved pieces can be made more curved or less curved to suit.

As a guide a dreadnought size guitar will need the following approximate number of curved and straight pieces:
- Top or back purfling - 52 straight pieces, 12 curved pieces
- Rosette - 16 curved pieces
- Back strip - 21 straight pieces

Once installed it's best to level the strips to the timber using a hard sanding block with sandpaper attached with double-sided tape. This hard block will help keep the surface level.
